Thanks to the bad service of our ISP providers, unstable 4G connections, and weak Wi-Fi connections, our internet connections can go out on us right when we need them the most. One of the most frustrating situations that can happen is in the middle of a large file download in Chrome. One flaw in your connection can make this once simple process take much longer than it needs to, putting us in a circular loop of requesting the file over and over again, always starting off from scratch and finally, the outcome is wastage of time and data.

Thankfully, you can restart your download right from where your connection abandoned you. This may not be a big problem for other web browsers, but when it come’s to Google Chrome this is a big problem. Hopefully, if you read this post till the end you can overcome the problem.

 Step 1: Copy Download Link

Copy the download link (failed download which you want to continue) from the downloads page in Chrome by pressing ctrl+J. Right-click it and select the ‘copy link address’ option.

Step 2: Initiate Download In Firefox

Paste the link in Firefox and save the file. Now allow it to begin the download. Once the download has started. Right-click the file in the download progress window and select Pause.

Step 3: Locate the failed download in your PC

Open the file location where your Firefox was downloading the file, it will be saving with an extension .part. Check out the name both firefox and chrome will be saving with a different name even though both are downloading the same file. Copy the name of the file including extension also and delete the file after copying it. Let’s say Firefox was downloading it with the name Kali-Linux-2018.2-amd64.iso.part. Copy the entire name.

Step 5: Rename failed Download

Go to the failed download file you located in Step 3  and rename it according to the name you copied in Step 4unconfirmed853967.crdownload to Kali-Linux-2018.2-amd64.iso.part Windows will prompt you that the change may result in a corrupt file don’t pay attention to that and go ahead.

Step 6: Resume download

Now open your Firefox browser where you have paused your download file. Right-click the paused file in the download progress window and resume it. Instead of downloading from starting, Firefox will resume the download from where Chrome had left off. That’s all.

What’s going on?

When a download in Chrome fails. It leaves behind whatever the files were downloaded but in the Chrome Download format. You cannot open these files unless you remove .crdownload extension. For example, a video file download has failed in chrome browser so whatever the length of the video has been downloaded in your PC it will be stored as .crdownload instead .mp3, .mp4 or .3gp format so if you rename the file with these possible extensions you can able to watch your video till it has been downloaded. Similarly, with all proper extensions, you can open the .crdownload file.

Chrome itself cannot resume these files because its download manager doesn’t support it. Firefox, on the other hand, can handle it just fine, provided the name and extension are correct. When you start and pause the download in Firefox, the browser creates its own download file like Chrome did. The only difference between them is the file size and extension. Chrome file has bigger size than Firefox because it had downloaded more. What you essentially do is rename the Chrome file to firefox file. When the download is resumed, Firefox will check for its own file name and extension so it will pick up the renamed file of chrome and start from where it has been downloaded continue to download in it
